Top 10 Tallest Buildings in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is not known for having a skyline of tall buildings, unlike many cities around the world. The historic centre of Amsterdam maintains its charms by not allowing any big high rise developments. In fact, you will find a lot more tall buildings in the Dutch cities of Rotterdam and The Hague.

There are a number of skyscraper towers located around the periphery of the city in the main business district areas – Amstel, Bijlmer, Sloterdijk and Zuidas.

The tallest building in Amsterdam is the Rembrandt Tower in Amstel which is 150m tall. This tower is the 5th tallest building in the Netherlands with Rotterdam taking all 4 top spots – the 165m high 45-storey Maastoren being the very tallest.

The following lists the top 10 tallest buildings in Amsterdam. All of the top 10 are corporate office blocks or residential towers and generally not accessible to the general public – although some may occasionally open their doors on Open Tower Day (Open Toren Dag).

Top 10 Tallest Buildings in Amsterdam

1. Rembrandt Tower 150m

Completed in 1994, the 36-storey tower in Omval (Amsterdam Amstel) is 150m tall including its 15m antenna. Designed by ZZDP Architects, it has a minor resemblance to the Empire State Building in New York.

2. Mondriaan Tower 123m

Also located in Amstel, next-door to the Rembrandt Tower is the Mondriaan Tower – at 123m tall with 32 floors it was built in 2001. It is an office space for Dutch banking giant Rabobank.

3. Maritim Amsterdam* 114m

Currently under construction on the north bank of the IJ in central Amsterdam, the Y Towers development will feature 2 buildings that will rank in the top 10 tallest buildings in Amsterdam. Designed by Team V Architecture, they will add to the Overhoeks area which already features EYE Film and A’DAM Toren.

The 34 storey Maritim Amsterdam will be the largest congress/conference hotel in the country. It will stand 114m high and will come in as the 3rd tallest building in Amsterdam when it is completed in 2022-23. Also see Overhoeks Residential Tower below.

4. ABN Amro 105m

This 105m, 25 storey building was opened in 1999 and is Dutch bank ABN Amro’s world headquarters. It is located next to Amsterdam Zuid station.

5. WTC H Toren 105m

The H tower of Amsterdam’s World Trade Center stands 105m high (28 floors) and was built in 2004. It is part of the large WTC complex of offices, shops and restaurants at Amsterdam Zuid.

6. Amsterdam Symphony Towers 105m

The 2 Symphony Towers (A and B) both stand at 105m with 30 and 28 floors, respectively. Completed in 2009 they are also found in Amsterdam Zuid.

7. Overhoeks Residential Tower* 104m

Part of the Y Towers in Amsterdam Noord, the Residential Tower Overhoeks will have 32 storeys and will be 107m high. The distinctive sandstone coloured building will feature large staggered balconies. It is due to be completed in 2023.

8. Amstel Tower 103m

Completed in 2018, the 103m high 30-storey Amstel Tower is part of a complex around Amstel station which includes residential apartments, office space and the Meininger hotel.

9. Valley Noordtoren* 101m

The Valley Noordtoren is a 3 tower residential and office complex which is under construction in the Zuidas district of Amsterdam. Due for completion at the end of 2021, the tallest building will stand 101m tall and have 29 storeys.

10. ITO Toren 100m

Part of the “Mahler 4” complex in Amsterdam Zuid, the quirky ITO tower is named after its Japanese architect Toyo Ito and is 100m high with 25 floors. It is home to Accenture and other companies and was opened in 2005.
