Rembrandts Amsterdam Experience is an immersive multimedia presentation about noted Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn. It highlights Rembrandt’s turbulent life and career and focuses particularly on Rembrandt’s last years with a reconstruction of his studio on Rozengracht in Amsterdam.
Rembrandts Amsterdam is located on the ground floor of a building near Max Euweplein, not far from Amsterdam’s Leidseplein square.
The experience show lasts about 25 minutes and is held in 2 back rooms using state-of-the-art projection. The front entrance hall has a ticket desk and small shop area.
Depending on the visitor group, shows are available to play in multiple languages – either Dutch, English, German, French, Russian, Spanish or Italian.
Rembrandt was born in Leiden in 1606. At age 18 he became an apprentice to painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. After completing his studies Rembrandt set up a workshop back in Leiden with compatriot Jan Lievens.
A few years later Rembrandt moved back to Amsterdam to work for art dealer Hendrick van Uylenburg and lived in his famous house on Jodenbreestraat. Today this is the Rembrandt House Museum which is open to visitors.
In Amsterdam Rembrandt lived beyond his means and had to declare bankruptcy in 1658.
This led him to move to a smaller rented house on Rozengracht in Amsterdam and he became ’employed’ by his mistress Hendrickje Stoffels and son Titus. He continued working although his style of painting changed considerably – his brushstrokes became coarser in comparison to his more detailed earlier works.
Rembrandt eventually passed away in 1669 aged 63 but having outlived both Hendrickje and Titus.
If you wish to learn more about one of the most prominent 17th century artists, Rembrandts Amsterdam Experience is worth a visit. And at 25 minutes the show length is short enough to fit into most Amsterdam itineraries.
Of related interest, the Young Rembrandt Studio is found in Leiden and is the house where Rembrandt spent his formative early years. It offers a similar albeit shorter video projection experience about Rembrandt’s time in Leiden.
Rembrandt’s most famous work is The Nightwatch (1642) which can be seen at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
