Oude Kerk (Old Church) is a church located in the red-light district of Amsterdam with origins dating back to the 14th century. The tower has recently gone a long-term renovation but will be open in 2023.
The Oudekerkstoren (Old Church tower) gives a good view of the surrounding district.
When open, climbing the tower is done by taking a guided tour (small groups only) which are given by knowledgeable local students who speak excellent English. There are no lifts in the Oudekerk – you will have to climb up narrow spiral staircases and step ladders – so it is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
The tower (including wooden spire) is 67m in height – with the viewing platform at just over the halfway mark.
As you go up, you will stop off at different levels where your guide will explain various aspects of the tower – such as the inner wooden structure and the 17th century 47-bell carillon.
Note that the viewing platform itself is fairly narrow and moving around is done in single file.
The Oudekerk is one of 3 church towers in Amsterdam centre that can usually be climbed – the others are Westerkerk tower (also under renovation) and the Zuiderkerk tower.
