The Fashion For Good Museum is located in an impressive 5-storey listed building on Rokin in central Amsterdam. Known as the Gebouw Leesmuseum (Reading Museum Building), it was built in 1800 in the art nouveau architectural style.
It is the headquarters for the Fashion For Good foundation and sister organisations such as the Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SCA) and Social & Labor Convergence Program (SLCP). It provides co-working spaces for those focussed on sustainable fashion.
The museum originally opened in 2018 at the ‘Fashion For Good Experience’. In 2020 it received official museum status.
The museum is spread over 3 floors and a visit starts in the basement. You will find a permanent exhibition covering the history of fashion and a fascinating insight into the current life-cycle of clothing – from manufacture and transport to retail and use. Did you know that just 0.6% of retail price of a T-shirt goes to the worker who made it.

The first floor of the building features a large exhibition area on the sustainable future of the fashion industry.
You will see a wide variety of new biomaterials made from the likes of fruit peels, bacteria and algae, mushroom ‘leather’, and spider silk. All exhibits are presented in English and Dutch.
Fashion For Good Museum also offers guided 1 hour tours to provide further insight into the exhibitions. These can be done either in person or virtually over Zoom.
There is a ‘Design Studio’ where you can design and print a T-shirt. The ‘Good Shop’ sells sustainable clothing, books and accessories.
The museum hosts regular workshops on subjects like sustainable dyes and repairing clothes. There are also special ‘Innovator Lab’ workshops for children aged 6-12.
